Question Newbie Qeustions ---- Please Help

Hi All,

I'm new to Harley's, motorcycles, riding, the culture period. I'm a 21 year old College student soon to be graduating. I live in Michigan and I'm trying to figure out how to get my endorsement, from there, I'd like to buy a Harley, something sporty and mean looking I looked at the HD site and really liked the Dyna Fat Bob, unfortunately I can't come up with anywhere near 15k...

Now to my questions, can someone please tell me what I should look for (good and bad) in a bike (I.E. mileage, tires, oil, price, etc...). Also can someone tell me how to get my endorsement or rather the best way to learn to ride. Where to look for a used bike, and anything else that might be helpful to a new rider/ future harley owner.

Thanks,

Curtiplas

that a lot of info.... there is a search feature at the top of the page, U questions and more have been asked a bunch of time and there are a lot of answers in here already on about any subject... so do some searches and then what U don't find come back ask in the area that U want to know about.....
Also the HD knowledge base at the top right in the blue line is like an index on lots of info, look in there and see.

Welcome from Bristol, England.

I cant help you with most of your questions as I'm in the UK and our systems are different. I presume endorsement over there is the equivalent of pssing your motorcycle test over here. Actually getting an endorsement on your licence here means that youve been prosecuted for an offence such as speeding, but there you go, divided by a common language.

I believe your best starting point out there is to sign up for an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation).

Personally I would leave thinking about buying a motorbike until after you've undertaken such a course as depending how confident you feel whilst undertaking the training it may have an effect on what sort of bike you look for.

I always recommend starting out on something a lot smaller than any Harley. Something such as a cheap second hand Honda Rebel. It will be cheaper to buy, a lot lighter and more forgiving and you wont be so heart (or wallet) broken if you drop it. As with anything, learning to ride a motorbike involves a learning curve and personally I would rather do that on something smaller.

That said, there are people who do start out on a Harley, all I can say is it wouldnt have been a route I would have been comfortable with myself. But if you do the MSF course, you may have a better idea of whether its the route you want and would feel safe following.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy the ride and stay safe.

Welcome from an avid rider and HD fan in Indy! I highly recommend a MSF or Harley Riders Edge course to get started correctly and safely.

Good advice from the Brit. We all may be more alike than we think, in spite of the language barrier and of course they drive on the wrong side of the road over there. I have to agree, take a course, get your endorsement or whatever it is called. In Texas it is another class rating on your license, but learn to ride first, the rest will come easy.
