Default breaking in a harley

When you buy a new harley what is the breaking in period, reason I am asking is today I went to pick up my new bike up and the salesman said it's not good to drive it on the expressway at a speed o f sixty mph for a long period of time.He said you should not drive over 45mph for the first 500 mile's.
So since there is no shortcuts to my home I brought a trailer back and picked it up.
Thanks

They told me under 50 mph for 100 miles. Under 60 mph for the next 100 miles. Never, in any gear, over 3500 rpm. Under 70 mph for the next 150 miles. I have 3200 miles on it and it never blew up, so it seems to have worked.

Mike welcome to the HDF, congrats on the new bike. As for the break in period opinions very. Some say go by the book and others tell you to very your speed don`t stay at one speed to long and also down shift alot as your slowing down to stop , something about lubing up the top end . But do as you feel is right ! Ride safe and often Steve from Az.

They told me not to to drive over 45 for the first 50 mile sand vary the speed till you reach 500 miles.
My auto mech teacher told me on motors all bearings are broke in the first minute the motor is started. Cam lifters are broke in after five minutes or so.

The piston rings take longer. This is the reason for varying speed. When you use the motor to slow down you are creating alot of vacume and this pushes the rings against the cylinder walls. I personally broke the fifty mile mark on the way home driving like they said. The next day i had plans so i hit the interstate. I had about 100 miles before i hit the interstate. No other way to go but what i know about motors i didnt hurt nothing. 11000 miles on a 04 and still running strong. Just drive easy and dont run a higher gear at low rpm. That hurts a motor more than anything even after its broke in. Stay in fourth till the 50 mile mark, and stay under 75 mph till you hit 500 miles and you will be fine.

Welcome aboard and you will find if you read your owners manual it describes exactly how to break it in. Whether you want to follow it or not is up to you. I did follow what the MOCO said since I would presume they know better then anyone how to break in the bike they made.
