Default Jezcruzen...

...well, not exactly just yet. I'm a member of the 50+ crowd and haven't ridden anything with two wheels other than mountain bikes in about 30 years. (borrowed dirt bikes don't count)

I'm anticipating the purchase of a new Harley and am interested in a model that will be kind to these old bones. I'm not much of a fan of the 'touring' look although I'm sure they are quite comfortable. I like the Deuce, the Low-rider, and am becoming more interested in the Super Glide. The SG seems to be a good compromise - but I'm not convinced that I want to compromise - if you know what I mean.

I intend to ride close to home mostly, cruising with friends up through the Blue Ridge on day trips - and around town, of course. My wife says that she is not interested in riding along, but I think that will change once the bike is here. Any of you that might have a recommendation to this 5'8", 30" inseam, 175lb. older guy regarding which model may fit the bill would be welcome.

Regards,

Les

Hello and Welcome, Jezcruzen.
The best advice is to do a test ride and go from there.
I'm not far behind at 48 years young and have ridden several makes and models and I know what the dilemma is.
On 1 hand we want the comfort and accessories and on the other hand we want the bare necessities.

Can you buy 2?

Well, hello, Ironhead. Thanks for the reply. Can I buy two, you ask? Well, you know...with the yacht payment and all it might get a little tight

I'm not sensitive about the age thing. I noticed while in the local Harley dealership recently that there was a lot of grey hair represented...or no hair!

I'd be a little reluctant to ride someone's $15-$20K bike right now. I'm scheduled to attend a motorcycle rider's course at the local community college. That should re-aquaint me with what I've forgotten. Friends have offered, but I've passed on the invitations so far. The dealership here locally doesn't seem to provide demos to try out. They don't rent Harleys, either, which means that I may not really know how that new bike I just pluncked down a healthy payment on actually rides until I drive it off the lot. I wouldn't buy a truck or car under those circumstances. What to do?

i'm a short guy i'm 5'9" with a 29" inseam, most of the bikes with the forward controls are not real comfortable to me, and i also rode dirt bikes so i went with the low rider because it sits lower and it's mid peg, there are mid pegs bikes in all of the HD model lines, and you at a latter time can do a conversion or add some highway pegs. i'm 54 and had been off of two wheelers for 25 years wife and i are having a ball riding again. good luck!

Hey Mike, we're about the same height and inseam... and you're right about the forward controls, especially with a stock seat. I had to add riding pegs on the front motor mount and it's somewhat a stretch. [X(]

I have about 28" or so and have found mid-controls to be like riding a dirt bike, and the forward-controls are a litttle bit of a stretch for me, although I really like them when I'm on a long ride.

I'm 5'8 with a 30" inseam. I found the controls on the Wide Glide, I rented earleir this year, to bit a little bit of a stretch, but not uncomfortable. The Night Train and Softail Standard's controls are called "forward", but they're about an inch closer to the seat, and fit me perfectly (I'm pretty sure the Deuce's controls are in the same position). These are the bikes I have the most experience with.

Cheers!

Lots of bags; saddle bags (boxes), fairing with a stereo, a rear throne for the little Mrs. and another bag or two here and there. Like an original Harley "big" bike with all the stuff on it...
