It sounds like a great move. Once you make it, you will say things like I should have done it sooner. Welcome to the Forum from Indy. It's a great place to spend time when not riding.
Hello and welcome to HDF from NorCal... Plenty of information here to help in your decision making... Probably alot of GW converts already here... Good luck.
My last touring bike was an '84 GL1200. When it was time to upgrade I just couldn't picture myself on a GL1800 despite the performance. I bought an Ultra Classic instead and never looked back.
There are some good buys out there if you look around. I found mine on eBay but spent plenty of time talking with the owner before placing a bid. I also had my local dealer run the VIN & verify the service history. It was a 1 year-old bike with only 4k miles and had been serviced by a dealer so I felt comfortable with it. Won the auction, used some frequent flier miles to get a ticket to DC, and rode the bike home. I had made previous arrangements with the owner to pay when I arrived so I had nothing but a free plane ticket to lose if the bike wasn't as advertised. My "test ride" was 755 miles in 15 hours!
I'm not knocking the GL1800. It's performance blows my Ultra out of the water but I just don't care for the "rocket ship" looks.
