Default Howdy from Maine,

I've been riding most of my life (started on a Rupp 3 1/2 HP @ 8) and have been in love w/Harley's since I can remember. Have a 79/80 FXE I've been building and rebuilding since it was bought in 90'. Haven't been involved w/any forums till now, joined more out of quriosity than any other reason. Have learned a few things about that old Shovel of mine that was learned though more error than trial, thought that if I could pass a tip or two allong it would be nice (trust me, it's a bummer trying to put a clutch basket back on @ the side of the road, but it can be done.) I found this site looking for info on tranny's, specifically oil quantities (it's Sunday, no shop's are open, I can't find my manual and nobody I've asked in my area can remember). If memory serves me I think it's 8 oz. of 80/90. Saw a thread on sprocket nut's backing off and thought I'd pass this tip allong, I was having the same issue. I happened to notice that the sprocket had three threaded holes (I'm sure for the use of a puller to remove it) and that when the nut was tightened down one of the three lined up in such a way that it could be used for a deadman. I bought a 1/4 20 X 1/2" cap screw, installed and bingo the nut stay's in place. It was a tight fit so if you try this be patient, you may have to jockey the sprocket nut in order to get things to line up right, and put a little locktight on the deadman. This might save the sprocket nut from needing a new seal the next time the sprocket needs to be replaced. One more thing would be to make sure there is adiquate space between the nut and deadman to tighten properly and try the deadman in the sprocket before trying to assemble on the bike. It worked for me.
