Just bought a used 2008 xl sportster custom. It has some aftermarket mufflers on it.... want to put the stockers back on. I removed all the clamps..bolts etc but wasn't able to remove the mufflers. On the inside of the mufflers there is a round 'thingy' that keeps the muffler from sliding back. Do i have to remove the whole pipe from the motor?
Hello from Pikeville, Kentucky. No, you do not have to remove the whole pipe if they are just slip-on mufflers. By a round "thingy" are you talking about the crossover, it goes from one muffler to the other?
Get a bigger hammer, and they will come right off!
I fought getting the stock mufflers off of my 2 year old bike as well... they had seized on to the pipes... one would turn, but would not come off - the other was fully seized, and would not turn...
at first I tried to be careful and go easy, used some penetrating oil, and a light rocking motion... 45 minutes later, I broke out a piece of 2X4 and a 3lb maul - low and behold, they came off!
Howdy from Houston!
You should not have to remove the whole system...
If you removed the brackets...and clamps the "muffler" should slide off...
Ok maybe not slide...but you should be able to separate them...
No, it seems to be part of the mounting system. My brother has a older sportster and his doesn't have them...go figure.
I'm afraid to pull the muffler to hard and break something.
