If you can squeeze out enough money to by an 86 or newer you would be much better off.
I'll second that opinion and with some experience.I have owned and ridden both Ironhead and EVO Sportys as well as an EVO Superglide ,EVO Electraglide and a TC Electraglide.
Even if you get a good running Ironhead Sportster it's a much higher maintainence machine than an EVO.
Early EVO Sportsters are a bargain as they go for about the same price as an earlier Ironheads.
Ironheads are getting old enough to start being seen as collectable nostaliga bikes.
I spent 8 years on a '75XLCH as a daily rider and did my own maintainence on it.
If you do wind up with an Ironhead get one with electric start.(TRUST ME!)
