I live in Maine and I am in the process of buying my first bike and I have a dilemma. For the same price I can either get a super clean stock 1979 ironhead or a 95 1200 sportster.
I hate to start yet another ironhead vs evo thread, I have read many on this forum and others in the past few weeks researching for my first bike.
The ironhead is a little high in price for that year and I think the evo is a pretty good deal for the price.
I like the looks of the ironhead a lot better than the evo. It has much more character.
My concern is with reliability and possible performance upgrades. I understand ironheads require a good amount of maintenance, which doesn't bother me too much. I don't mind working on a bike. I just don't want to be working on my bike more than riding it. I would also like the option to be able to do possibly boost the performance of the motor in the future as I get more experienced.
Also, if the evo breaks down will I be able to fix it myself or am I going to need some harley mechanic to do it? I have total confidence that I could fix most problems with the ironhead, but I haven't read as much about the evo sporty.
I guess I have made this intro long enough at this point, what do you guys think?
First, Welcome. Second, they're both small bikes, similar looking. Go with what you feel comfortable about. I would go with the newer bike, over the 32yr old. JMO
