Back Riding after 25 years

Hello Just want to say to all. Just got back to riding after 25 years. My wife told me to get a bike again. I ride a 2006 1200 custom sporster. I have had it for 3 months. Now my wife wanted her own and found her a 1984 ironhead only 10,000 on it and looks like brand new . SS Carbs and drag pipes. Have a little work to do. Only getting about 25 to 30 MPG had jets changed and put on dino by harly shop. any suggestions?

Welcome back after the hiatus. How much better MPG are you looking to get out of the ironhead? Try the tech forums for specifics, but one of the culprits that were mentioned is the exhaust and jetting. Better breathing usually translates to cracking it wider than usual. Exhaust backpressure is a catch-22, some backpressure is needed to create a vortex to suck the exhaust out. Otherwise with partial exhaust gas in the intake air charge, combustion efficiency suffers. that's one of the reasons why 2-stroke engines have far inferior MPG's compared to 4-stroke. A simple ram-air (K&N cones) may help with some of the situation, maybe experimenting with some swap meet pipes to restore a little of the backpressure?
