Default Can't start 120ci jims engine

Hello everyone,

First of all, I'd like to wish you all, a happy new year 2012.

I live in France in Paris, so please excuse my poor english.

Here is the story:

Bike: HD - softail
Model: DEUCE
Year: 2003
Carb: MIKUNI HSR 45
Engine: JIMS 120ci WITH MANUAL COMPRESSOR RELEASE
Ignition: S&S IST
Battery: ODYSSEY 545MJ (brand new and ok)
Coil: SPYKE
Spark plug wires: NOLOGY
Spark plugs: NOLOGY SILVER B2S
Starter: not the stock one, and should be something like 1.8kw

Engine is new from the box and has 209 miles done since mounted in the frame.

Ok, now let's try to crank that beast... Push the compression release... turn on the key...press the start button...and...the starter moves to slowly and is not able to start the engine.

I can only start the engine with the help of a battery booster, as the rotation of the starter is a little bit faster but still it is hard and not really enough.

Of course the battery is very quickly discharged and after two or three trials I have to recharge it and watch TV!!!

Is the starter not strong enogh?
Is the battery not strong enough?
Do I need to change the starter outer pinion for a better ratio?
May be all of that and more???

So, please help me find a solution.

Thank you very much.

Hello! Welcome to the forum!

1. Manual compression relases may not be working
2. Battery may be needing a recharge...is the battery old?
3. battery connections may be loose

Take out the compression releases, and see if the starter can turn it over. If it can't still, then it's not the compression releases.

Hello Joe,
Thank you for youer answer,
The battery is brand new and ok.
The compression release works fine.
I also tried with and without the spark plugs and there is only a small difference of rotation.

Process of elimination.....bad starter, or a bad electrical connection.

Hows the weather in Paris?

While turning it over with the spark plugs out that should spin very easy..I think wires, loose connection,is the starter getting hot to the touch..?

Thanks to all for welcoming me.

The starter becomes so hot you can't touch it.

The wires seems to be strong enough but I' check that
