I have a 2000 Roadglide with 32,000 miles on it. It's been a great bike for me but I'd want to have the one you are looking at checked closely. At 40,000 miles you would want to make sure the cam chains had been checked. I'm sure there are others who could tell you several things you would want to look at. I guess it depends on how much they want for it.
I agree with Toyrider, if you have questions about it to yourself you will always question it even after the purchase. Hello and welcome to the forum from central PA.
With proper maint that bike has alot of miles left. Depending on how much they want for it......and if he can show you that there has been sceduled maint on it...2 20,000 mile, maybe have him do one if it has not been done..
The miles are not toohigh. However, I wouldn't give more than 10k or so for it. You need to consider the cam chain tensioners as pointed out. You also need to know if it is an early 2000. If so, it has a weaker rear cam bearing in it that can let go without warning. If it is injected, the injection is sometimes problematic compared to the newer Delpihi injected bikes. Also, the swingarm on that vintage bike and all of the ones with 3/4 rear axles are prone to crack.
Now on the other side of the coin...
My '00 has 64k on it. It was a "bad bearing " bike. It never gave me any problems. I swapped it out at 52k. The cam chain tensioners were good at those miles. My FI system has been really no trouble other than losing it's idle about once a year. My swingarm is still in once piece.
