Hi All
Been watching you all for a couple of months. Figure it's time to say "Hello!"
'03 FLHT Standard. 36k on the odo.
The bike found me, as part of an estate settlement. Sent it to the local dealer for a checkup and some new tires, ended up putting a pile of nickels into her. The cam chain tensioners were broken, replaced with the hydraulic setup. One leaky primary seal replaced, still dripping. Might be the tranny output seal. The shifter shaft seal is dry. I'll have to chase that down.
I just got back from a cross country road trip. North-central OH to San Jose CA. Stayed off the interstates as much as possible, and I didn't eat in any chain restaurants the entire trip. 3200 miles. No mechanical problems. couple of loose bolts, but these things happen. Blue locktite is quickly becoming my best friend.
Ran across OH/IN/IL to Wisconsin. Lake perch and potato pancakes for dinner with a local ale.
Across Iowa and Nebraska up to the Badlands. Rapid City/Sturgis then past MtR./Crazy Horse and over to Cody taking 14A from Sheridan. Spectacular views. Snow in July! Yellowstone was beautiful. Funny thing about running at altitude - the wind buffeting is reduced to nearly nothing! Ran into some microbursts in Jackson - the Tetons really squeeze a storm out the sky in a hurry. Over to Idaho, then Reno/Tahoe, then home.
First bike I've had with cruise control. Man, I gotta agree that's a nice feature.
The Standard had a plate on the radio and two missing gauges. I added tunes and oil temp/oil pressure. Couldn't really see why anyone would want an air temp gauge in that hole. Enlighten me?
Carb engine. V&H slash pipes sound nice.
That "pillow" saddle is the most comfortable thing I've ever ridden. Doesn't look like much but damn it's comfy. Longest riding day was 625 miles from Idaho Falls to Reno. Just over 1000km. Not a butt buster.
Thanks to you all for the sage advice, and for pointers to maintenance and service issues.
I'll see you in the wind.
R.
