It's nothing more then insurance. They win on most cases. If (big if) you can and do your own work, you will come out ahead (more then likely) but who knows. Harley honors it. The bike I am riding had Harley's 5 year extended plan. Year left on it when I picked up plan. Sort of good selling feature considering my basket case bike. I rolled warranty to my name with nothing more the a letter and proof of ownership. The local dealer pulled it down 2nd time in bike's life for loud racket in primary. Made his buck (I was out 50) but still missed problem. I finally fixed it 6 months later (alternator rotor spline gone, crank spline in bad shape and primary full of metal from the chain misalignment due to wear from rotor slipping grooving it and moving over), but that is neither here nor there. Harley honored there end..just sorry mechanics at local dealer which you cannot blame Harley. if you need it, buy it. Try to negotiate price. Good luck on that.

Thanks All. Been touring in Europe the month of June and just got back. Sorry for the late reply, but I was way too busy having fun and looking for bad beer. Couldn't find any !!! LOL
you have 2 years to decide. if you have a lot of problems before the manufacturer's warranty expires, might be a good idea to get one. shop around...there is a good bit of difference from what each dealer charges. do a search on the forum. several people have mentioned a specific guy's name that really gives a discount on them.
There are some (potential) problems that typically may not emerge until JUST after the usual/standard warrantee... Some of the 'primary mechanics' issues for example... I weighed the cost of the extended warrantee up-front vs paying for any repairs out-of-pocket down-the-road... Turns out that in my case it was a wash... Another consideration is if/when YOU want to make any mods that might affect the terms of warrantee... If I were to do it again, and what I recommend to friends is to get (NEGOTIATE) the ESP especially for the touring-class bikes...
And welcome to the famdamily...

Like most ext warranties they are not "factory" warranties. They are underwritten aftermarket supplied coverages. If a repair is major, these companies will send out an independent inspector that reports his findings, then the warranty company decides if it's covered based on inspectors findings, pictures, and any related findings. That being said, I have Harley's ext warranty on my bike. The repair facility does have input to the waraty company during a repair.
