Alternator problems??

I just bought a 1990 Soft tail. Bike has lots of goodies and I love it! My friend I got it from said the battery was dead so we jumped it and drove it straight to the shop to get a brand new one. Last night I went to start it and my voltage in my batt was at 9.89. I'm wondering if I have alternator/charging problems? Has anyone had similar problems? Is there something I may be overlooking and may need to consider? Also, if it is the alternator, does anyone know the model or batt #?
