Question Do tires get old?

I bought an 05 FXST last fall. It has the original tires and probably the original tubes. The tires show a tiny bit of weather checking but the tread is still pretty good (only 8k miles). I rode a few hundred miles before winter and everything seemed OK. Can I run them until the tread is low or should I replace since they are around 10 years old?

Tires get old and deteriate. If there 10 yrs old I would replace them, especially if their showing signs of weather cracking. I personally have never had a rear tire last longer than 8,000 miles

Never see any recommendations on motorcycle tires, but every trailer tire manufacture recommends trailer tires be replaced every 3 to 4 years regardless of tread wear.

Hey there,

Yes, they get old, some faster than others, depending on weather and storage conditions.

If you trust them, ride them. If you don't trust them, don't ride them.

Either way, think of the tiny bit of money that you *might* save by running them a few more miles and ask yourself if it's worth it.

All the best,

Shane

One of the reason we are recommended to change trailer tyres after a few years (I've seen six recommended) is that many of us don't do a high mileage with a trailer, so the treads don't wear out, but the carcases and rubber age. I use the same number for bike tyres and frankly would not ride another mile on yours! I strongly recommend you fit a nice new pair and ride on with confidence.
