Question Fix-a-Flat

My rear tire went flat today, and I had to wait 5 hours for the tow truck. Would like to not have to do this again.

I own a 2019 Softail Low Rider with hard rims (not wire wheels). Has anyone had experience with the Fix-a-Flat type products? I have heard that once you use them there are problems. But, maybe they have improved and would be a good emergency roadside repair tool to carry. If you have experience with one that is OK to use, will appreciate your feedback and recommendation of a brand.

There is more than one kind. Water base stuff washes right out if used. The gas type melts rubber not good. For what it is worth on one of my Sidecars, Sunday night in Milwaukee. Nowhere to get a tube mine is junk spoke wheels I put 3 cans of the water base stuff from a gas station in and got back to my motel. Put two more in the next day got to a meeting I had to be at. Added one more latter that day and got home to a new tube. Wash the stuff out put in new tube life was good.
Tubeless tires it is your call but you can carry a plug kit. I do.

Slime has an approved for motorcycles and Ride-On is a balancer/flat preventative approved for motorcycles, they both claim to be safe for wheels, tires, etc and claim they do not void a tire warranty. You can check their websites FAQ, lots of discussions about Ride-on all over motorcycle forums, most seem to recommend it I think and it's already in your tire, nothing to carry.

Plugs and some means of inflation are another option for a road side repair. That is not an completely approved tire repair either. And will probably void your tire warranty if you have any concerns over that aspect.

Nothing will help if it is a sidewall puncture.

Continental, Michelin, Pirelli, and Shinko’s position on dealing with punctures is clear as day: Don’t even bother carrying a plug kit. “Call a tow truck,” is how one VP of marketing replied when asked what to do when you get a flat. These tire manufacturers assert that there are too many variables involved, from the puncture to the repair, and that there is simply too much at risk in terms of rider safety and liability to condone it, even in an emergency. Most dealerships and repair shops share this sentiment.
Other brands, specifically Avon, Bridgestone, Dunlop, and Metzeler, offer an opinion that’s more in line with what consumers would hope to hear: Yes, punctures can be plugged in an emergency situation, and a repair that both fills the wound (plug) and seals the damage (patch) that is installed by a professional can even be considered permanent if specific criteria are met.
As stated, every manufacturer that permits permanent repairs says that an off-the-rim inspection is mandatory. Why? Since tubeless tires are unlikely to bleed all of their pressure at once when punctured, it’s possible for the rider to be unaware of a leak and cruise along on a deflating tire. This isn’t uncommon and leads to the possibility of internal tire damage, either from overheating or from the puncturing object gouging the tire’s inner surface after deflation has occurred.
I choose to wait on a tow truck and live to see another day, that's why I have roadside assistance. There is literally a million discussions on this.

P.S. If I lived in Nevada, I might do differently, but probably not.

Though not yet used in anger, I carry an AntiGravity battery pack and the tiny compressor they sell for it. It all fits (almost) into a windshield bag. I also carry a Stop-n-Go plug kit, also a very small package. This isn't a cheap solution but you can patch a tire and pump it up again rather than wait 5 hours. The battery will also boost your bike, (many times on a charge) and charge your cellphone and acts as a flashlight too,,, FWIW.

I also use Ride-On as a balancer, great stuff !
