Wasn't sure exactly where to put this, or if anyone here knows the answer. I am wondering if the different wheel speed sensors/ABS sensors all operate in the same way, or if they're basically "same on the inside"? For instance, on my 14 Breakout, the front and rear sensors appear to be the same, with the difference being the front one is much thicker than the rear. The rear is maybe 3/4" thick (guessing, don't have it in front of me at the moment), and the front sensor is maybe double that. It appears the front sensor just has more metal cast into it to give it added thickness, for whatever reason. Other bikes from similar years have sensors that look similar but have different part numbers and thicknesses, but I'm wondering if the "sensor" part is the same across the board?
Reason I ask is for custom wheel fitment purposes. For instance, I am messing around with a different wheel for the front of the Breakout, but because of the thickness of the wheel speed sensor it pushes the wheel a little too far over toward the right side of the bike, and the tire would be off center. On the Breakout all you have on the left hand side is fork, speed sensor and then the wheel bearing/wheel, no spacers, so there's nothing you can really change to move the wheel further to the left. BUT, lets say you wired in a rear speed sensor in place of the front one, you would gain 3/4' of space on the left to move things around and center things up, IF the sensor works in the same way. Make sense? The sensor part looks the same except for the extra width, and the front and rear wheels use the same part number ABS bearings, so I'm wondering if the basic functionality is the same even though the parts look different?
For front wheels I can tell you they are, only the thickness is the difference. Whether front and back are interchangeable, I don't know (maybe check through parts numbers?), but I would not see why not. Best, niv
