I've run many miles on plugged tires on bikes, cars and trucks with no problems. Recently I had a screw in a brand new Dunlop American Elite rear tire. Since it was new, I figured I'd have my indy pull the tire and patch it from the inside but they refused to do it because of liability concerns. All they would do is put a tube in it (it is a cast mag wheel). I would have preferred a patch but I already had the wheel removed from the bike and I had a long ride planned in 2 days, so I went with the tube.

Please take into account the survivor bias in these replies, whoever died as a result of a damaged tire is not likely to share it here…

LOL, gd point.

UPDATE: After reading all the posts, (and THANK YOU ALL) I got a new plug kit since I gave the one I had to my son not long ago, then I willed the nail out.
.

.
As stated above, I had a hunch it was not in THAT deep. It appears to be in only 3/16". Even tho it is the valley part of the tire tread, I am guessing (with my limited tire knowledge) there is plenty more the nail would have it pierce the belts, cords, plies, etc... or whatever to cause any serious issue.

As of this morning, it is holding air like a champ.

And HOPEFULLY next month I will have a new bike. And YES I will tell the salesman abt the nail issue and the read MUST be replaced.

So thank you.......oh, I am only doing city riding (no highway) and will keep a close eye on the tire. Will likely also keep my tire pump and plug kit with me just in case.

TY, y'all the BEST!

I would pull it out and see if it’s leaking and plug it if it does, ride it., ooops! I just saw the above.

Glad you pulled it out.
FYI people.
Anything that is in a tire, even if it's shallow will eventually, as the tire wears, be pushed further and further in until it ends up in the air chamber or through the tube.
Tires on a motorcycle are one of the biggest safety concerns and one of the easiest things to remedy should a problem be found.
