So I want to upgrade to a 180 tire I understand my stock rim is 4.5 and the tire should match the rim recommended!
issue is barley any tire manufacturers state rim width recommendations why is this if it’s so important?
lastly I want to try the cobra chrome 180s I can see on the tire page it recommends a 5 inch rim how bad can it be to run this tire on the 4.5 it’s minimal difference?
please could someone either help guide me to stop worrying or making a big mistake
It's important because a wide tire on a narrow rim will change the profile of the tire, and you end up with a more narrow contact patch in the center of the tire. (which in all honesty could be combated by the added width of the 180 tire, but you get the full benefit)
That said going from a 160 to a 180mm tire on a 4.5" rim you are fine. The Wide glides came with a 180 tire on a 4.5" wheel from the factory. Although again due to the profile of the tire some manufactures do make 180 tires specifically to be mounted on a 4.5" wheel dunlop, Michelin, and Pirelli all make 180 tires meant to be use with a 4.5" wheel. And it looks like you've found Avon does as well. But the jump from 160 to 180 isnt huge so I wouldn't be bothered by putting any 180 tire on a 4.5" wheel in this application.
Long story short, you're just fine to put a 180 tire on your stock wheel.
