I'm still debating on trying the 170 tire. It looks good, just don't know how much I will run into trying to fit it. I get all sorts of different opinions as you can imagine. I've read you need the deuce rear brake caliper to fit the wheel. Although on HD's website the exact same part number is listed for the rear brake caliper looking up a 2002 softail standard, and comparing the website side by side for the 2006 deuce. I did get the seal ring ordered on ebay, its NOS but cheap anyway.

It is 168 mm. Bridgestone Battlax A41.

Start by measuring the inside width of your rear fender, if it's wider than 170 it should work.
On Dynas sometimes the rear wheel is not perfectly centered in the fender, due to misalignment of the rubber mounted engine, a Softail has the engine mounted rigidly so that should be less of an issue, but check that too just to be sure.
As for the caliper, if there is a difference I'm guessing it is to make it easier to mount the wheel, most likely once in place there will be no interference. There is no movement between the wheel and caliper so you can get away with minimal clearance.

I got the wheel cleaned up, installed new bearings and dry fit onto the bike without a tire. After fiddling with it for a while, I did like Meatball said and waited to put the bolts in the rotor until the wheel and spacers where on. It doesn't look like it will go unless I do that. But it did end up working and it looks to be all lined up the same as the old one. I'm still trying to think which tire I want to try back there. I'm leaning towards the Bridgestone or Metzeler, I just don't know which model would be best since this is a modification.

It's good to hear everything seems to fit.

As for the choice of tire I think it's most important to decide what size to go with. Did you measure how much room there is inside the fender?

I measured it. it was around 174mm if I remember correctly. Shortly after posting my update I decided to go with the same tire you have, the bridgestone battlex A41 170/60-17. It should fit I just may need to turn the bolts around, we will see

Update: It fits, barely. Had to turn the strut bolts around, I think it’s safe to say we knew that. This is the bridgestone battleax 170/60/17 like meatball used. I may try to see if I can order some spacers and walk the wheel over slightly to give some room on the left side, it would also push the wheel closer to center. Opinions? Thanks

Left, sprocket side

Right, brake side

The concern would be that with only a change in spacers, you would also be changing the positioning relationship of the Rotor within the Caliper (pulley isn't as critical) ... How good is the Rotor centered now? However much you move the wheel, the rotor would be moving the same amount within the caliper.

Depending on how movement is needed. To do it right, you would then remove material from the rotor mounting surface on the hub to keep the rotor centered.

te
Belt clearance

Rotor/caliper spacing

Thanks for your insight multi, I'm thinking the area you are saying to mill away to do it correctly would be the wheel itself where the rotor mounts? I think just moving it to the right 1/8" would be good.
