Default Nitrogen Filled Tires

anyone have any feedback on this topic? I've got nitrogen in my tires on my new truck and the tire pressures stay very consistent in both hot and cold weather. Supposed to be so much better than air.

Just wondering if anyone has knowledge of this pertaining to motorcycle tires.

thanks
todd

Waste of money. Huge profit for the tire store. What happens when you're on the road and need to add air?

Using the cold air pressure for nitrogen will leave you with low air pressure when hot. Tire makers know that pressure will increase when hot. They recommend a cold air temp only, and expect that pressure to rise. If the pressure does not rise with heat, then when the tire is hot it's underinflated.

Using standard air, get the tires nice and hot, then check the pressure. If you're using nitrogen, use that hot pressure as your minimum.

Consurmer Reports just did an article on nitrogen filled tires on automobiles. Very little defference in air loss over a year. Many places charge for nitrogen, and it's an inconvenience. Not recommended.

I've not tried it in my bike, but on my truck, I do run slightly over inflated, and over the past 2 years, there has been no fluctuation in my tire pressure. Someone wrote, what do you do if you need to add air while on the road? Never had that happen, haven't had to adjust pressure since I put the nitrogen in.

I have used Nitrogen in bikes in the past. They do indeed hold pressures better, something to do with the increased size of the molecules. This is not what Nitrogen in tyres on bikes is about though. It does not react the same way as good plain old air and will maintain more even tyre pressures over a wider temp range. M/C tyre pressures are much more critical than car tyre pressures. This really only comes into play on the track where the tyres are pushed to the absolute limit. This is not applicable to our bikes really, as the nature of the beast will not allow us to get anywhere near the limit of modern tyres.

Save your cash, you'll need it for those riseing fuel prices.[:@]

Exactly, nitrogen makes up 78% of air anyway, so you can see why it would only benefit you in racing situations where an extra 10th of a second can mean the race. Hey I have some deer alert horns I can sell ya, or some grounding straps for your car. lol

i've got a grounding strap already but thanks! LOL.. just kidding. i appreciate all the input on this. my experience over the past few months with the nitrogen is nothing more than noticing that the tire pressures are consistent. i'll do as you folks suggest and stick with the good ole air.

thanks a bunch folks

If you get it free, use it. If you have to pay, pass on it. It does little for passenger cars/trucks/bikes. I asked Metzeler about the use of nitrogen and was told by their staff that it is a great money making tool for shops. Yes NASCAR and NASA and OTR and airlines andtrucking companies use it, but that is because of the benefit on such high stresses of these transports. You family car or bike will never see 1/100th of those stresses

I run helium to leave a lighter foot print. Scouting taught me that.

If you have a couple hours with nothing better to do, check out this thread. Not much more to offer than already presented here but much more entertaining.
