That would probably work then, but try the zip tie deal instead of a marker, I think you'll find it alot more accurate and easier since you won't be looking at a bunch of marker lines.

Just wanted to thank you all again.

I didn't make any adjustments at all from when I put the rear wheel back on and started this thread.

When I took the wheel off, I didn't follow the manual exactly, because I'd read on here many times that if you don't mess with the axle adjuster nuts you should be able to put it back together with the axle square (or at least as square as it was when you took it off).

So I took my first "ride" of the season (I'm in Wisconsin ) for a short 10 mile test run. I wanted to feel the bike ride before making any adjustments if necessary. It rode just like it did before I put it away for the season. Everything seems fine.

So while I didn't have to make any adjustments you guys definitely helped me feel more confident about the process, and the zip tie thing definitely helped me make a more accurate measurement.

Enjoy your ridin' season everyone (and for those of you who ride all year... you suck! ).

I wasn't really happy with the way Harley wanted you to adjust the wheel alignment with a 1/8" bent rod. Unless the rod rests almost exactly on top of the plug there is too much room for error. And one side has more of a distance between frame and plug than the other.
I chose to use a 90deg angle at the frame "hole", and use a tape measure to measure the distance. You can easily measure 1/32" of difference using a tape (or metal rule). I think its more accurate than the bent rod.
By the way, I wouldn't go out and buy those $100+ plugs. I made them out of bolts. Left side has a 12mm bolt, and the right a 16mm bolt. Just enough clearance to fit them in the holes. I just centered a dimple on the hex bolt head by drawing lines across opposing hex points and punching a hole where the 3 lines intersect. If the bolt needs to be more snug, than 1 layer of electrical tape made it stick "hard"
