Old Gunny & lo-rider......great advice guys. Rather spend a little now rather than having huge regrets later. Considering hard on a set of Metzelers 880's.
I'm sure the crack is just age as the previous owner hardly rode the bike and after I got my butt on it and started putting miles on it again she started showing her age.
O.F. I read that post back before I even noticed my issue but I do believe it's different. I think mine was more age and non use related than manufacturing flaw.
Going to borrow a camera durning lunch and post later today the crack. It's not large by any means but being that it was located right below "warning" even my thick-headed self caused me to stop and think.
I know this is a horrible picture. The crack is to the left of the white line and extends upward out of the picture. It basically does look like something that has opened up due to age and drying out some also called "weathering".
I just 1,000 miles ago replaced my front Dunlop tire. 2911 code date. 130/70B/18. Noticed yesterday there is a crack in the sidewall on both sides and in some areas deeper than I would like. Took to the dealer and they were not quick to replace. Said "looks like it will be ok." I asked for a letter stating that and when my wife and I drive 90 on it I will make sure my daughter has the letter. I was told to wait and it would be replaced. The same tire I took off is 4 yrs old with 18,000 on it and the side wall looked better than the new. Whats up with Dunlop tires?
Tire cracks. Recently as of 3 weeks ago we finished a 3000 mile ride to West Virginia, the Smokies and back to Texas. A friend noticed at the dealership when we returned, cracks in the side wall of my wife's new 2011 Street Glide. 4800 Miles. Since it was Sunday the dealership was open, service was not. They were accommodating and let us leave it for service in the morning. She rode home with me. The cracks were all around the bead of the tire on both sides. Some were deeper than others and more noticeable. Today that same friend was down visiting and we noticed his 2011 Street Glide the front tire doing the same thing. I wasn't lucky enough to get pics of the tire on my wife's bike, but did get his. He has only one crack showing, my wife's bike had several in various spots all the way around the wheel on both sides. Here is the pic of his tire. He has one similar on the opposite side also. The Dealership warrantied her tire and put a new one on. He is going to take his bike and get the tire replaced also. 7500 miles.
These are both on 2011 Street Glides with stock tires. Dunlop 408F I believe. (with out running out to the shop)
I don't know when they showed up on the wife's bike, but we did a lot of riding that week which included the Dragon. I wasn't looking for small cracks in a NEW tire on a NEW bike. Thank God nothing happened. Get the word out and check those tires!! Cupping was one issue with the old ones, now cracks? Please check your tires!
Pic is in my photo album and is larger.
