Default sportster neutral position

Just bought my first bike today, a 1987 HD sportster 883. Never even sat on a bike until today. A buddy is showing me how to ride and just taking baby steps right now. One question I have is if the neutral position should feel heavy or hard to move backwards ? It kinda feels like it is still in a gear or a locked position even though the neutral dummy light is on. Anyone out there that owns this type of bike that could elaborate and tell if the bike is just heavy and should feel that way or if it is something i should have checked out? thanks

Pull the clutch in and see if it does the same thing. If it feels different your neutral is messed up.
