Michelin Commander II is getting rave reviews so far. I only have about 2500 on the rear so far but I love it so far. 8000 to 9000 miles is pretty good on a non touring tire.
You're going to be lucky finding a tyre that will give better mileage, IMHO. That is a custom size tyre. I have just fitted my favourite brand, an Avon Storm to my bike, but haven't done any mileage yet. I will be happy to get 8k miles, to be frank! The prime brands worth looking into are obviously Avon, Continental, Dunlop, Metzeler, Michelin and Pirelli. Call over to the Dyna and Softail forums to see what they prefer. Not many HDF members call in here!
I really liked Avon Venom X's but they were getting to expensive & after motor work only getting 5K on rears. I switcherd to Dunlop Elite 3's last year. Handling in all weather is great & so far have 7K on rear with lotta tread left plus they are cheaper. Key is to go the mfg. website for tire pressures & check pressure every couple weeks minimum. 40 psi front & rear. I will be sticking with Elite 3's.
ps - I hated the stock Dunlops, took them off after 2K.
Avon have replaced the Venom X for our Harleys with Cobras. Early days yet, but they may give better mileage. For those who prefer other qualities over mileage they are sure to be just great! My new front is on order....
Commander II's are a good choice, but if I were you, and you have the time, Metzeler is coming out with a new one called the ME888. Michelin beat them to the punch but I'm sure the engineers at Metzeler wanted their product perfect. Should be out very soon.
I just replaced my rear dunlope 402 with 11,000 miles on it . withb a dunlop e3 because of long life reports buy many forum members . So far it handles way better than the 402 . I have a fresh front e3 waiting to replace my 402 . it has 14,000 miles on it and seems to have a fare amount of tred left on it.
The e3 is usually cheaper than the 402 . i bought mine from Jake Willson free shipping to my door . i paid $134.99 for the rear MU90 16 and $110.99 for the front MT90 16 .
The key to long life and good safe handling is to buy a quality air gage , set your tire presure right at the MAX recomended preasure on the side wall ....check it frequently.
Don't just go buy the pressure recomended in the owners manual . If you are running a tire other than stock as difrent tires are enginerd diffrent. For instance a Metzler is to be run at a higher presure than a 402 , if you run the Metzler at the presures recomended in the owners manual . it will cause cupping low milage and negativley efect handling . so read the tires sidewall and set the pressure acordingly.
I installed a rear Commander II on my FLSTS, Not many miles yet, handles good, Looks Good.. So far happy.. I always use the owners manual for Tire Pressure.. I believe Michelin suggests the same for their tires..
