Took the front wheel off of my 1990 FLSTF today and ran it down to the local cycle shop to have a tire mounted. Upon returning, I was unable to get the speedo to seat correctly.
investigation shows that on the disc side (rider left) the bearing race is not sitting down against the center spacer, there's almost a 3/8" gap inside. Doesn't respond to manipulation. Anyone seen this before? I wanted to check before I get involved with large amounts of force.
Went ahead and pulled the seal off. Sure enough, somehow in the process the bearing race is pulled away from the center spacer. Should be rectifiable with a hammer and a new seal
Update, I couldnt get that race to budge, short of beating it to death, which is usually frowned upon. Lacking the appropriate puller I suppose I'll just take the wheel down to the shop in the morning and bite the bullet.
Those bearings are tapered rollers, so the centre part, with the rollers in a cage, will just drop out if the rubber seal is removed. It shouldn't get stuck! The same shop should be able to put it right, as they probably disturbed it. You're right not to hit it.....

Turned out there was some mung preventing the center spacer from coming over fully. Easy fix.
