Default Caliper Question

I have a 01 FXSTD and I'm changing out the front pads. I'm wondering how far the pistons should seat in the caliper , flush or do they seat that far?

Flush is fine.I use a C clamp to push the piston back in. A piece of wood or a flat bar of steel helps keep the piston straight on the way in.

I think my bike sat alot before I got it , ended up spraying the caliper down with brake clean and scrubbing around the pistons with a toothbrush. Used some wooden door shims wedged between the old pads to seat them. They didn't want to stay seated untill I cleaned them up, plus I couldn't get a good lever.

All good now , new fluid & pads with a nice firm lever.
