Default Tire traction issue.

I have a 99 Electra glide and have had the rear tire replaced about 3,000 miles ago. They just replaced it with a stock replacement tire, it's a 130mm I believe. The problem I am having is that if I just use my rear brake to slow down hard to make a turn into a side street (I don't do this often) I can easily "roll" the tire over, it never locks up but it loses enough traction to make a light screeching sound. Am I stuck with this amount of traction from a 130 rear tire? Can I change to a different brand to gain some traction or am I stuck with doing some modifications to put a bigger tire on? This isn't my first bike and I have never had this problem with other bikes. I also have a C50, it does have a 170mm tire on it but I can brake pretty hard on that bike with just the rear and it doesn't lose traction like this one does. ....and yes I know the glide is about twice it's weight.

Your Glide is twice the weight. The momentum of all that weight shifts to the front as soon as you hit the brake making the rear very light. You need to learn to use your front brake. A wider rear tire would actually slide a bit easier. Learn to use your front brake. Did I mention using your front brake? Maybe take a rider course to lose bad habits and relearn good ones. Use your front brake.

So just to try my theory of the bike being twice the weight, I tried this same move on my dads goldwing tonight and the wing would not slide the tire like the glide. And the wing doesn't have abs but has a 180mm rear, so I still need to know if this is common to having a 130mm rear or if its just the brand of tire they put on. Just an fyi, the rear of the glide has a 2-1/2" drop. 481....so much help there, thank you.

If you are using the rear brake on its own, then you lay yourself open to a lot of problems! However it cannot be denied that stock tyres have poor grip and a change of brand would greatly improve things. I wouldn't use a stock tyre except under great duress!

Use both brakes! Next time you change them use better quality tyres.
