Default Tire Direction

I have been told that tires should be mounted in the right direction. Also, that the tire has a mark that should line up with the tire valve. Is this true? If so, how do you tell if it is mounted in the right direction and what tire mark is suppose to line up with the valve?

the tire does have a direction arrow on it but im not sure about the mark for the valve stem, that doesnt sound reasonable to me... its not like every rim has a certain way that it has to be made or mounted to the hub

Most tires that are uni directional will have an arrow on the sidewall indicating the direction of rotation. Also, the tread pattern will often indicate the direction of rotation. Many tires will have a 'dot' on the sidewall that is supposed to line up with the valve stem hole in the rim.
These site will help ya figure it out.

Glad I could help

Deano: It's not about the rim, it's about the tire.

No problem guys. I always check the date of manufacture on tires when I put them. There have been problems in the last few years with people ending up with old new tires.

Motorcycle tires are marked with a dot that is lined up with the valve stem hole on the wheel. This marking has been a common practice since the 60`s, or maybe even earlier.

I was told the dot (mark) on the tire has to do with balancing so the heaviest part of the tire goes opposite of the valve stem

All tires have a spot ( designated mark ) that should be aligned with the valve stem. This makes it a bit easier to balance and generally will require less in the way of additional weight when balancing.
