Can you use a sert that has been used on another bike?

I’ve heard conflicting stories about the re-use of race tuners. I’m told that they marry to the original ECM and can’t be re-used. I’ve also been told by someone that he tuned 3 different bikes with the same tuner. He said as long as the tuner/bikes are programmed from a different computer each time. That it can be re-used????? Don’t know for sure.

Thanks, Bob

Married to the bike/VIN. In fact, if you get your ECM replaced, you must have the VIN put back in it, or your SERT will be useless.

Bob:
From my experience with a SERT that's married to my '05 RK, I have taken the unit and plugged it up to my '07 Ultra. I can open Data Mode of the software, get ECM info, and even do a data recording of running engine.

I cannot, using Tuning Mode of the software, upload a new map to the '07. That's where the data link being VIN locked to the '05 RK comes into play.

The data link (black box) that comes with the SERT has a OTP (one time programmable) EPROM. You can basically use the SERT on any bike to scan codes, record data, etc, but the moment you program the ECM (upload new map) the first time it reads the VIN from the ECM and writes it to the OTP EPROM and that is the bike it is married to.

IF someone is using the same SERT to tune/upload new maps to multiple bikes, they're using a cracked version of the Software's exe file which isillegal.

Thanks for the replys.
I'm finding some listings on ebay that are used.
I guess those would be better left alone..

Thanks, Bob

Half the guys selling them on Ebay dont know a dam think about them. Some of these guys buy "lots" of parts from Dealers to resell & dont have a clue what they are. Try Zanotti's or M&M .New for around $370.

The issue of cracking the software is not true. Software can't be "fixed" to reload another bike. However if somebody is handy with a solder gun and can get ahold of the same chip (RS?) and happens to replace the used one he/she might be in business. Not that I know of anybody that would actually do something like that.

Davy:

Don't make any monetary bets that the software can't be cracked........files were posted at several sites before mods could yank them!

Those that have"beta tested" legit software for years know this all too well.

Oh yes software can be cracked, that is one of the pleasures I used to partake of years ago. I'm a good boy now and have kind of lost touch of what one can do these days. A little over a year ago there was a cracked exe going around that would allow you to use the SERT on more than one bike.... It worked with mt5 files.....thats all I'm saying.

All I'm saying is there is no need to "crack" any software. Simply replace the chip that stores the vin. Somewhere in my past life I too did a little software work(about 35 years of assembly language code) but I'm too old and forgot everything but how to have sex and ride a bike...but not at the same time cause I get confused about when to shift.[sm=idontcare.gif]
