07 SE slip-ons - HELP!
While I'm not looking for an obnoxiously loud exhaust note, I would like the bike to sound like a Harley. This is my sixth one, andthe exhaust note is way too quiet. Interestingly, my brother just bought a new 1200L Sporty, and his '07 SE slip-ons sound fantastic and are plenty throaty. Probably because the Sporty SE'sare much shorter than the Dyna ones. My last bike had a pair of Samson fishtail slip-onswith internal baffles, and they sounded awesome.
I know the best solution is to 86 the SE's and get some V&H or Rush slip-ons, but before I do that, I'm considering removing the fiberglass packing from the SE baffles. I did a search and found some threads that address this, but no one really stated how the bike sounded after this was done. If anyone has done this mod, or has a better idea, I'm all ears. At this point my air cleaner is stock, as is the ECM. The bike does run great with the SE's, no popping or flat spots, it just doesn't sound "right". Any input will be appreciated!

First, remove the 2 littles screws:

Then I used a wood stick, that fitted into the baffle and slam it on the ground several times to remove the baffle:

Here is the baffle :

I drilled holes in the baffle (10mm is about half an inch):

I removed a little bit of fiberglass too. The most difficult part of it, is to aligned the littles holes for the 2 screws. I used sand paper to smooth the edge of the baffle to make it fit easier into the muffler. Another trick is to enlarge the 2 little holes for the screws on the baffle, It help when you put it back and they are not 100% aligned. I used a rubber hammer to knock the baffles back.
Here in Canada, cops are severe on loud pipes so this mod is just perfect for me. The sound is a little more quiet than the old SE slip ons but it's a lot better than stock 07 SE slip-ons. Another good point: it is written, on the pipes, that they are "street legal"
My brother rode the bike up the street, and I could hear it a quarter mile away, so I think I'll leave well enough alone. The tone is nice and deep, but not too "over the top" for my aged ears.
Again, thanks for the help. This is a great forum!
Thanks for takingthe time to image and document your steps so well !!
on the same basis - is there any another baffle that is designed as a direct replacement for these SE slip-ons? Saw a mention of "Big City Thunder". Are they direct replacements for these baffles??
Any others??

Regarding the flow of the new SE's vs. the SEII's, I don't know the answer. However, I wanted to retain the stock air cleaner and ECM map, and the 07 SE's allow you to do that. A remap is required if you go with a free flowing exhaust and/or a more open air cleaner. The stock map likes a good amount of back pressure to boost low-end torque. I'm sure that comes at the expense of top end power, but I'm no longer the speed freak I was when I was younger.
Pulling and reinstalling the baffles on the SE mufflers is no fun, especially the reinstall. It took some grinding and some really foul language to get them back in place. I used rivets instead of the original baffle retaining bolts for a cleaner look. And drilling the baffle retaining holes to 1/4" was a huge help. Thanks to Bobberforever for that tip!
While I am now satisfied with the sound of the 07 SE's, if I had it to do over I'dhave gottenthe Rush slip-ons with 1.75" baffles. They will work with the stock mapaccording to two dealer service reps I've talked to, as long as the air cleaner left stock.
