Default Replacing hand grips

How big of a job is it to replace the hand grips yourself? I'm buying a new bike on Tuesday and can't find replacements through Harley that I like. I want to buy some third party grips but I'm not sure how big of a job I'm getting myself in for. Thanks.

I'd suggest getting a set of Kuryakyn Iso Grips. You should be able to pick them up at the Harley house. Our's carries them. Also consider adding their throttle boss to the throttle grip.

I put the Kuryakyn ISO grips on my Heritage and found the install an easy job. However I modified the install on the left side...

Instead of using the glue supplied, a local motorcycle shop owner suggested the following when attaching the left grip. After you remove the old grip and clean the bar, apply black electrical tape to the bar underneath where the left grip will go. Use a candy-stripe pattern and don't overlap the tape as an overlap will be too thick. You then work the ISO grip over the electrical tape coated handlebar. After a day or so you will still be able to twist the left grip (with some force) but it will be quite "stuck" to the bar due to friction.

This method will allow you to remove the grip in the future without destroying it. Mine is really tight and doesn't twist without considerable effort. I saved the glue so if I decide to do the permanent install in the future the option is there.

Just a thought...

OBTW, if you do it yourself, be careful when you get to the right (throttle) side. The throttle cables have little round brass pieces which attach the cables to the grip. These brass pieces will fall off the end of the cable, bounce off your garage floor, and go to the same place where lost socks and car keys go. They are easy to put back on, just easy to lose. Good luck!!!

I used the air pressure and some solvent to remove the grips and it worked very good. They came off undamaged too

I have Ness billet grips and they come with three small set screws to secure the left one to the bars and the right (throttle) side comes with he boss. Very simple job and I like the set screws instead of the glue or tape route. Look at my gallery and you can see them.

I put a set of the Kuryakyn ISO grips with the throttle boss on my FXRS on Saturday. They were about $60.00, plus tax, from my local indy shop. I wish I had know about the tape trick....

I used Aqua Net hair spray and a wrap or two of tape to secure my left grip. Worked great. Tim
