Anyone have experience with air temp gauge on new Electraglides? Mine takes while to stabilize...no problem, but it stabilizes at 13 degrees above actual temperature. It is not engine heat as it happens a sustained speed. Is there a calibration screw if I pull the outer faring?

I am a member of a couple of other forums and just found this one. As for the Air Temp gauge, I've been reading where they are kind of useless. Mine will bounce all over the place, but sometimes doesn't even move. I have an 04 Electra glide Classic. Check out this site http://www.wallyscycleworld.com/virtualshop/OT.asp , they have an oil temp gauge that will replace the air temp gauge. It mounts right in the same hole on the fairing. I think I'm going this route.

It can't be as you say. Ambient temperature gauges are simple devices. My wife bought one for a couple dollars that works well in the oven, Honda has one that works well on Gold Wings, and even proctologists use simple gauges to get reliable readings in their particular work environment. If Harley consistently produces a useless ambient temperature gauge, even after years of production, it would mean their instrument engineers and QA group are incompetent morons. As I said, it can't be as you say. Now if only one of these experts would explain where the adjustment screw is, I would calibrate my gauge to 32F in an ice bath. Come on experts, restore our faith in Harley know-how.

I also ride an `04 Ultra and it does show warmer than the actual temp of the air. Harley sells a compass kit that goes in that spot and with it being so expensive, I am not going to change the guage. I think like you it show's too warm to be very accurate, but do you really need a temp guage to tell you it's cold at 60 miles per hour? It's nice to look at it to see what it might be, but I just keep a couple sets of gloves in the saddle bags and if I need to...I change them. Keep the faith in Harley, nothing compares to what we are riding and it's made in the U.S.A.
All I know is that mine gives false readings. The needle will swing all the way to the right, stay there "pegged" for a while then fall to the left and bottom out. Then sometimes it will hang around the middle. I'm going with the oil temp gauge.
Interesting post, when I was in the HD shop the other day making arrangements, drooling, and otherwise finding ways to spend money, I asked about the Temp Gauge for the Electra Glide.
The manager told me that basically he would not recommend putting the OAT gauge in there, rather, he would recommend the oil temp gauge...
Pilot1996, I have a 01 ultra and hate the air temp guage. It's always colder. I've looked for a oil temp guage, but can't find one to replace the air. Where did you get yours?
Take the Air Temp Gauge out and replace it with an Oil Temp Gauge. I did that several years ago. I tend to know when it is cold, or hot. I imagine you do too.

If harley can't make an air temperature gauge that works, what makes you think your oil temp guage is any different? They both use the same technology. Personaly, I want to know air temperature. I tour every chance I get, and it is interesting to know how hot is hot when riding across S. Nevada in the summer. More importantly, it is useful to know if temperature is approaching 32F when crossing a Rocky Mountain pass on a wet day. I'm going to tinker with my ATG when I get time, and see if I can make it work. If not, I am going to complain to harley until, hopefuly, they fix it or replace it under warranty with something I can use. Not a another defective temp gauge, but a Compass!
