Default Humor the old man for a minute

I picked up a second bike, on 08 FatBob. The wind noise is louder than the engine. I can't even shift gears by listening to the engine. All I want is a little more engine sound. I'm totally happy with the looks of the stock exhaust system & stock performance of the bike.
I asked the service guy about SE slip-on mufflers, SE AC, & download (thinking about $600 if I do my own labor). He tells me Harley got out of the "sound" business and the new SE slip-ons are about as quiet as the stock mufflers. If I go to anything else, the download will be inadequate and I'll have to add a SERT or other fuel management & dyno tune. Being the cheap SOB that I am I don't want to spend $1500 right now for sound. What "safe" alternatatives are there? Would Rush slip-ons be an acceptable substitute for SE slip-ons as far as the dealer stage I download is concerned?

With so many noise ordinaces and complaints Harley decided to take the quiet road for public image. If you do go to another pipe other than the Screaming Eagle slip on ask the service technician to do a screaming eagle stage II download which is for the 103 CC big bore. I ran my cleaner and pipes with out a download and definately recommend the down load. You can ask the difference between the stage I and stage II download to see if it may work.

Many people run Rush slipons with no mods to the EFI system at all- and I did it for a couple thousand miles before I bought a Fuel Pack. (Only got the FP to richen the mixture and cool the engine down a bit in the summer.) $200-$250 for a new set of Rush mufflers off Ebay and you've got the sound you want without breaking the bank. Most keep the baffle size at 2" or smaller so no download or EFI controller is required.
Never had any problems at all because simply adding slipons really does nothing for increasing airflow through the engine, so it doesn't worsen the already lean air-fuel ratio. Getting the Stage 1 download certainly won't hurt anything, but I'd try it first with just the slipons.

Change to any pipes of your choice and you will be fine. If you do stage one by adding the air cleaner later all you need is any piggy back fuel tuner to richen the mixture. There are a lot out there. I've got the cobra and the HP went up and MPG went down to about 34. I'm gonna try the T-max with Auto tune next. Terry componants has the Terminal Velocity II that uses stock o2 sensors for about half the price, but I gonna go right to the best. I haven't heard one person complain about the T-max

You cannot go closed-loop operation everywhere with the stock narrow-band O2 sensors, so the TV-II cannot do that. The TMAX or DTT are your best options for best control everywhere.

The real cheap guys I know take a concrete stake and drive it straight up the pipe to knock a clear hole in the baffels. I'm not sure what it's called however it looks like a catolitic converter web that should not be knocked out at the head end of the muffler. As long as you don't change the intake your ECM should adjust the fuel ratio enough to keep it running good.Harley made the decision to make all products compliant with regulations because two of the custom shops got fined. I don't remember the name of the one shop however I remember the number $450,000.00 as a fine. I didn't follow the news to know if it was apealed or not.

Howdy Grandpa,

What you should do is assume that any change you make to your bike that involves the air/fuel flow through the bike is going to effect the tuning of the EMC. Go back over the
Electrical/Ignition/Tuner/ECM/Fuel section for about 8 or 9 pages and open threads about the different tuning devices and read the pros and cons of all of them. If I were you I would ignore anything that Glens has to say. Make a modification, get some type of fuel management. Some people that post here have an agenda, be carefull to check out all the users of the devices and the folks that oppted not to use them as well.

Best wishes,

Pixs
