can anyone point me in the right direction here. is there a write up anywhere that will explain how to hook up a sidemounted plate holder/taillight and get it to power up. I will eventually remove the rear brake light and probably bob the rear fender while maintaining the rear turn signals to give you guys an idea of where I am going. any help will be great. My side mount light/plateholder is on order so I have time but I want to do my homework here.

Thee, I do believe this was discussed briefly at Under 50.

Kinda confused what you want to do first.

Leave the stock tail/stop and just light up the plate??

If so, pretty easy deal with existing wires/plugs.

thanks mud, I will go back to the under 50 thread and review. but as to what I want to do ...

step 1 install side mount plate light combo with exsisting taillight and turns functional
step 2 cut fender and lose stock taillight but retain turn signals as stop/run/turn

 

On Page 6 Under 50 TB.

As to your step 1, tie into the Blue wire for license plate light,
Black to ground thelite.

Your step 2 will be more complicated.

These colors are from 06 wiring under rear fender.

i had another member ask me how i did mine... so i sat down and typed this out...luckily, i saved it as a new text doc. so here ya go!

well, i kinda cheated,i pirated out the circuit board from the original taillight [to maintain the "plug-n-play" aspect] after removing the circuit board from the taillight housing i relocated it to the area beneath the seat.[same spot the wiring harness originates] i also wanted to get rid of all the crap running inside the rear fender [for tire clearance and just plain cleanliness] so i removed the harness and the plastic wiremold/conduit that it runs in...then i did the ultimate...the thing that freaks most people out.... i chopped the harness!.. yep chopped it down to about 8"[about 4" remaining @ each plug] in length and soldered/heat shrank it all back together. doing this enabled me to plug the harness back into the main wiring harness and the circuit board..and keep it all hidden under the seat!
now all that was left was run the new wiring for the new taillight and signals...

to do this.. i again broke out my handy-dandy wire cutters and clipped off the plugs[connectors] from the original taillight and turnsignals making sure to leave as much wire w/ the plug as possible
[atleast 3" or so] then i extended all the wires to reach the circuit board,soldered and heat shrank all the plugs to their respective wires... then ran the wires to their locations..[for the signals i ran the wires between the fender struts and the strut covers..another neat trick to keep wires out of the fender] soldered/heatshrank all the loose ends

as for the taillight..1st i scored some of that black nylon braid used for shielding extenal[stock] handlebar wiring..and a bunch of those "hole plug zip ties" from the stealer...since i had removed my lower belt guard soon after i bought the bike...i decided to utilize these holes to secure my taillight wiring..soldered/heat shrank loose ends
sheathed the wires, tied everything off... plugged everything in.... and watched all the pretty lights!!!
