Has anyone tried the Cycle Visions Bare Backs saddlebag mounts with HD bags?

 

I just ordered a pair of stock bags for my 05 Wide glide from a guy on EBAy (harley part # 79078-02). The local stealer said Bare Backs were the way to go and were much better than Ghost or Easy brackets. They said the Ghost and Easy's don't always fit and they rattle. The Bare Backs should work with HD OEM bags, (according to the dealer). I will find out in a couple of weeks.

 

I have the barebacks on my o6 wide glide and love them! You can put on and take off each bag in less than 30 seconds. I have not found that they rattle when attached, and mine have held up well with bags fully loaded on a couple of 1500 mile trips. You might be able to spot them on the struts in my sig pic. I have them mounted thru my sissybar quick connect brackets.

I only wish there was a way to lock the bags while attached to the bike.

Just another vote for a good product. HD big bags on and 01 FXD, after I relocated the turn signals.

 

I have the BareBacks on my 05 WG with the HD bags. They are working fine for me, no noise even when empty.

I'm also running the HD bags that are designed for permanent mount (can't find the part number of the bags). The stealer ran the bareback bolts and latching receiver hardware thru the bags, and the mounting bolt and flanges thru the struts. I had the stealer pay for this detachable setup because I had originally ordered the detachable bags and they put the permanant mounts on instead. Rather than take the bags back, they hooked me up with the bareback system.

Looks like you have the 79300-06B and I have 90369-06A they seem similar.

Just installed them on my 04 Heritage w/detachable sissy bar. (P/N CV139 ).

First the instructions that come with them are a mess. There are at least 3 areas in those instructions that don't make sense and can be better written with the exclusions of some words.

I called Cyclevisions and spoke to Brad, he was extremely helpful in deciphering the instructions. The kit is very easy to install once you understand what you are to do and for me the only tools I needed was vice grips and wrench.

One of the problems with the system is that the bags stick out a bit further than stock, even if you have the QR sissy bar spacers mounted on the strut.

Another thing I don't like is that the docking point covers which are sold separately for $30, not anywhere worth that price, do not cover the entire docking point spacers for the QR sissy bar, so the spacer does not get covered by the cover that is between the strut and the docking point of the bareback male end. It would be nice that they would manufacture a cap that is long enough to cover everything up to the face of the strut if they are going to provide a kit that works for those of us with the QR sissy bar. Yes, then if those were covered you could not attach the QR sissy bar but you just have to decide what look you want for today’s ride.

The other bad design is the isolators down at the attach point by the footpeg/floorborard. The provided isolators have a detachable threaded screw on one end and a threaded bullet shaped device on the other end with a hole in the end to attach the supplied cotter pin. The idea is that you insert the screw end of the isolator into the hole in the mounting bracket for the saddle bag near the foot peg/footboard then secure it from behind with a 1/2 in. nut that is NOT supplied; you have to snag it from your old isolator. Then you screw in the bullet shaped metal piece into the opposite end of the new isolator. Once that is installed you slip the mounting bracket that is part of the saddlebag onto the bullet piece and TRY to insert the cotter pin into the hole in the bullet piece to hold the saddle bag brace in place. The problem here is that in my case the thickness of the brace/mounting bracket on the saddle bag (OEM) is such that there is not enough room to insert the cotter pin. One solution to this is to screw in the opposite end screw on the isolator further in order to make less room for the bullet piece on the other end, thus the bullet piece will stick out further allowing the cotter pin holes to show when you have the saddle bag mounting bracket on. The problem with this is that you will only have about 2 threads showing on the back end of the isolator to attach the nut to.

The solution would be for Cyclevision to supple a slightly longer screw for the isolator...maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer.

My solution was to just reinstall the OEM isolators and use acorn nuts on both ends. Yes, you would need a wrench to install/detach them but you get a better look and they are secured much better.

With the bags off, and the docking point covers on...it doesn’t look too bad but I think the better look with the bags offis the Bubba mounts.

With the bags on and the sissy bar on it looks pretty good, with the bags on and the sissy bar off, there is too much hardware showing between the struts and the bag because they stick out a bit further.

 

I have them and love them. Had the easy bracket before, but the bare backs are much better in my opnion. I have the HD Softail Bags on my 05 FatBoy.
