Garage Door Opener Install (Roadglide & others)
Installing a genie garage door opener in a Road glide utilizing the PushToTalk button. This
button is not used on a roadglide so it was a perfect candidate.

torx t25
garage door opener, smaller the better
multimeter
wire stripper
2 short length's of wire say 8"
3-4 tie wraps
soldering iron
2 spades and 4 receptors or you can solder and shrink wrap, your choice.
clear silicone
small file
optional, beer... preferrably cold... i utilized 3...
Note:
The wiring diagram is incorrect, make sure you use the multimeter to verify which pins have power
and which don't. In my manual pin 7 is supposed to be yellow/black. It's a light purple/black,nice....
- use the service manual to remove the fairing
- connector 24 goes to the left handle bar control, should be the gray
connector on the clutch side of the handlebar, refer to the service manual
to be sure.
- slide conn 24 off the side of the radio and disconnect, the male side goes to the main harness,
the female side goes to the bars.
- I used pins 7 and 12, they where the only 2 pins for the PTT that where not hooked to anything
else. use the multimeter to confirm that with the ptt pushed 7 and 12 are connected. like i
said the wiring diagram was wrong so you best check!
- in my case, 12 has power going to it, but it's for the PTT only, so disconnecting it from power
had no effect on anything else.
don't cut anything yet, just verify which 2 pins work for you...
- pull apart the garage door opener and find the 2 pins for the button.
- jumper the button and verify it works, yes ?
- solder 6 inches of wire to each pin. After it cooled off i coated the wires with
clear silicone sealant, from the solder points out to the edge of the case were they
will exit for both protection and some strain relief..
- this was the first beer break, waiting for solder joints to cool
- I took a file and made a square slot for the wires to come out of the plastic casing....
- touch the wires together, again checking to make sure it opens and closes the the door....
okay, the scary part hacking your wiring harness.....
- first off, disconnect the battery....
- i cut the wire behind the female connector about an inch back, just incase you need to
reconnect again at some point.....
- i used 2 spades on the ptt side 2 receptors on the garage door opener wires we soldered earlier
and 2 receptors on the female connector... press the ptt button... door go up and down?
excellent.
- second beer break, while you celebrate your project success...
time to clean up your install
- those 2 receptors on the female connector will make it easy to reconnect the ptt button if
you decide to hook up the intercom system in the future....
- reconnect the battery
- plug the connctor back together, start the bike, make sure all the switches work...
- shut it down...
- put the connector back on the side of the radio bracket.
- I tie wrapped the extra wiring and remote to the harness. make sure it's secure, don't want
it vibrating loose...
the pain in the *** part, puttin the frickin fairing back on....
once done.....
check the ptt button one more time and enjoy that 3rd beer whilst admiring your new stealh
garage door opener.....

save yourself a whole lotta time and trouble;
I grabbed another speedo reset switch from HD, mounted it to the right of the radio on my ultra, opened up the chamberlain remote and ran two wires (soldered) from the push button switch to the remote terminals, put the remote in a ziploc bag and tie-wrapped it to a harness high in the fairing. buttoned up the fairing and it looks stock.
