Self Driving Cars: More or Less Safe for Riders?

Self driving motorcycles won’t happen. Hell, anymore I won’t even ride on the back with an actual skilled human rider in control.

Self-driving cars though? They’re coming—and probably sooner than you think. A couple of years back, I was at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, and I got to talk with some of the real-deal engineers from Audi. Through their interpreters, they told me that 80% or so of the hardware needed to make the current models drive themselves was already on the current models. Of course, my DNA is 96% large primate, and while I might type like a gorilla, it’s easy to tell the difference between us.

But I’m confident, before a modern Harley needs a full engine rebuild, riders will have to content with self-driving cars.

So what do you think? Would you rather trust a bunch of cell-phone using, coffee-spilling, makeup applying humans? Or a cold lump of circuits, wires, and radar?
