Default Is the 120" engine upgrade worth it?

I finally decided to pull the trigger and buy a new Road Glide Special. I did my homework and researched what the bike should cost as well as how much I was willing to pay. Problem is that when I got to the dealership they had the exact bike I wanted except it had dealer installed 120" engine(air cleaner, 2 into 1 pipes, etc) for 9 grand more. Does anyone have this upgrade on a 2015 Road Glide? I know there is no replacement for displacement but is it worth the money for what you get? I test drove the 103" HO and it went along fine but I'm curious as to how the 120" acts in everyday riding.

There goes the fuel mileage. I'm sure it's fast, but you can update the 103 to have as much power and torque for all you will need for way less than 9 grand.

This is another part of the equation for me. Are these mods you speak of coming from Harley or another company? How much of an improvement do they offer? Do they void the warranty? I know that the 120" was still covered by a 2 year/unlimited. But I also know that 9 grand is a lot of cash. What's to say I buy a 2015 Special and ride it for 6 months then bring it to the dealer and have them install a 120". Won't it still cost me 9 grand AND I keep my old engine? I think I am answering my own question here...

Read a bit. You'll find that the 120ST has a 12 month warranty. All stock emission control devices must remain in place, such as the oem exhaust and a dealer download to keep warranty intact. I don't know if the engine will retain warranty if installed after original delivery. This is for 106 hp and 117tq.

Most dealers can upgrade your 103 stock with a stage4 mod that keeps the warranty and will get you over 100hp and over 100 tq and that cost 2k plus labor. You can do a 110 upgrade the same way. It is my understanding the 120r is a race motor. I also have heard rumors that the moco is looking at modifying the 120 for future baggers. I'm not comfortable with a 9k engine upgrade right from the gate. I like to ride, I don't need much more than what my wethead 103 is producing now. I will do a stage 1 upgrade and go anywhere you can go with your 120r, difference is I will save in fuel cost and repairs. You will sure have some bragging rights with your 9k upgraded 120r bike, but I don't look for that in bikes I purchase. I hope this helps for ya. It really makes no difference with me. It's your choice. I suggest you continue your research before pulling the trigger. You did good to come here. I hope others with more knowledge than me chime in.

My answer would be no. If I was spending that much more money I'd want all the amenities like comes on the CVO Bikes, plus the 110 engines with a cam upgrade will net you plenty of fun. $9000 is a lot of scoots for just the engine imo so why not go all out and get the loaded version of that bike and get the CVO Roadglide !!!!

If you found the 103 to be sufficient it seems like a no-brainer to stick with it. You can always build it up over time and still save a lot of coin. Just my 2 cents though...

Yeah I have to agree here! If I was paying that much coin for just a motor I would personally be sick. Now if the deal was sweetened with other amenities that the CVO has to offer, then I may could justify it. The 103 motor is nice in its own right and can be made even better, and, likewise, the same way with the 110 and all for way less than 9gs

When you did your homework and research, was the 120 motor on the list of things you wanted? If not, then it's not worth it.
Make them get you the one you want and then you can do 9 grand worth of mods that YOU want. Or you can just ride it and keep the 9g's in your pocket.

There is a 2014 Limited for sale at my local dealership that the owner had built and only has 1100 miles on it. Has nearly $30k in extras, including the stage 4, baker 7 speed, etc. That bike is crazy fast and if it were me, I would rather have the stage 4 and baker 7 speed over a $9000 120st.
