Also the piston oiler jets are fed from the lifter bores and if slack you won't get good pressure to the jets in the piston oilers.
You need to make sure you have a good tune on the engine when you get through. Not normal to have all that carbon on top of the pistons. My guess is you were running very rich and the gas diluted the oil and caused the wearing. Would not be a good idea to tell dealer that. Too much lack of lubrication damage. Hope everything works out for you. It sounds like the dealership is working well with you so I wouldn't rock the boat.
I would prefer a new engine, but you are at the mercy of the MoCo on this.

With the info they are replacing the engine, I would switch back and just run the Harley Oil and have them do the service for a while. Not saying anything wrong with the Amsoil. With the add ons you have I would pull the FP3 and put the stock tune back on. It will run fine. CYA comes to mind. If you have another problem like this I would suspect MOCO will look at it with fine tooth comb. Keep your records also. Probably over kill, but that is what I would do. I never leave one stock so not saying that is what happened. Never had any issues either.
They are replacing the engine. I should have it back tomorrow or Saturday.

I talked to the dealer Friday and they had the engine in the bike, but didn't have time to test ride it. They called me yesterday and said it was ready and everything felt good. Only thing, I was at work. I work 24 hr shifts on the ambulance and couldn't go pick it up. They dealer is closed Monday for Memorial Day. I work Tuesday so it will be Wednesday before I can pick it up.

I'm glad the dealer and the MoCo stepped up to replace the engine and the only logical solution in this case. I would also agree that replacing lifters is a very good idea but again this shouldn't be at the OP's expense either. I chose to do a cam swap at 900 miles so I replaced my lifters with a set of GMR lifters and new SE cam bearings. The GMR lifters and S&S Premiums are the only lifters that the guys of J&B Performance will use with the GMR's there 1st choice. I now have 8000 miles and my bike is smooth and quiet.

I have 4,400 miles on my Year old 14 flhtk. It is completely stock. I am experiencing some rough idling and noticed the little engine lamp coming on sometimes when the bike is stationary. No coolant leak but seems like it is running hot. The fans continue to run for a bit after shutting down engine. Anyone know if this is normal?

Also, I had synthetic put in at the 1,000 mile service. Should I continue with synthetic at the 5,000 mile service or go back to conventional oil?

You are probably still in warranty. If fans are running it is running hot for some reason. My limited has only turned on the fans twice that I am aware of and I have about 6000 miles on it. Both times it was while breaking in and pulled into garage and they were on. I do have different exhaust and tuner on mine and monitor temp and definitely not having heat issue. You don't have the eitms turned on do you? push the front of the right blinker button and it will display status of Eitms. The Wet heads are set to come on at 80F ambient temp. I have never turned it on on mine. It will definitely make the idle rough. I would get it to dealer and get the fan and check engine light checked out.

Think I would take to the dealer for inspection, I have just over 13,000 and fans have come on maybe twice at most, rough idle , engine light ? take to dealer imo

I got my bike back today. I wasn't able to go to the dealership because my wife was sick. I called the dealer and told them I couldn't come today and they offered to deliver it. They got to my house about 1:30 this afternoon. I took it for a short ride and everything felt and sounded great. The work order showed when the tech dropped the oil pan he found a lot of metal. I'm going to call them tomorrow and see if they can find out what Harley finds when they tear the old engine down.

Glad it's working out for you, and props to you for treating your dealer and their staff like fellow human beings.

It's amazing how much of a difference that can make, and really sad that more customers don't give that a try.
