Wow, I wouldn't be too happy if that happened to my bike. Glad the dealer is working with you though.
Have they offered you a loaner bike?
Has this issue only been seen with the '14 bikes or has anyone had a '15 grenade like this as well?
Good Luck!
They haven't offered a loaner bike and I haven't requested one either. I have other vehicles to drive and also it's been very rainy here so it's not that big of a deal. I just want it fixed right and to my satisfaction. I feel like my dealer is doing what they can and will work to do the right thing.
I got a call from the dealer this afternoon. They are replacing the cylinders, pistons, rings, lifters and oil pump. I asked about the cams and the tech said they looked good. I'm off work tomorrow so I'm going to the dealer to look at everything.
I'm kind of thinking about upgrading the cams. What cams would ya'll recommend for the 103 twin cooled engine?
I went through the same problem with my 14 Fltcu, they tried to cheap out by just replacing 2 lifters and the oil pump, I asked for a new motor as the bike only had 500 miles on it, only had it a week, called customer service no luck, was told "repair or replace at our option". They ended up doing everything in the camchest. Needless to say, my last new harley. Glad I didn't waste money on ESP if this is how they handle warranty claims.

I didn't tell the whole story in my previous post since I was on my phone. The dealer called Harley yesterday and were told to check all the specs in the primary, mainly the compensator (sp?). Everything was in spec but by the time they got that done, it was too late to call Harley back. The dealer tried to call me yesterday but I was on an ambulance call and couldn't answer the phone. I called the dealer this morning when I got home from work and the service writer told me what had transpired. He said he was about to call Harley back and when he found out what they were going to do, he would call me back. He called me back in about 10 minutes and said they were shipping a new engine. He said as soon as it came in they would get it put in. He said in the past they have gotten replacement engines as quick as overnight. It's been frustrating, but I have to say I'm pleased with how my dealer is handling things. The dealer is Lander's Toad Suck Harley in Conway, AR. They are a sister store to Lander's Harley in Little Rock.

If you only had 500 miles on it and needed all that work, I think I would get the ESP... you'll probably need it. That or sell the bike before 24 months.

I really think a lot of how claims are handled depends on the dealer.

If I were you, I would send off a sample of your next oil change to a place that analyzes oil. If it comes back fine, enjoy the bike. If it doesn't, contact a lawyer.
I forgot to update ya'll on what I saw at the dealership. I went to look at all the parts. The pistons had a heavy coating of carbon on them. Both pistons had spots where the carbon had broken off and both cylinders were scored. The heads had carbon but they can be cleaned and the valves looked good. The oil pump was trashed. The cams had some scores on them.
The plan is replace cylinders, pistons, rings, lifters, cams and oil pump. They cylinders and pistons are on back order until May 15. The service manager said he was going to call around to other dealers and see if maybe somebody had some they'd let go.
I talked to the service manager about upgrades and I really like his advice. He said since I've done the stage 1 (FP3, not dealer download) that I got the most bang for my buck. We looked at cams and torque curves and the stock cams in the twin cooled engine is spec'd for torque right at the cruising range. I think I'll just leave it stock. I like the way it runs and pulls with my wife and I on it so I don't see any need to spend the money for something that's really not going to give me that much improvement.
All the stuff they are replacing is well and good. What about the statement they made about the lifter bores having slack. Unless the lifters were undersize which is not likely, I would think the aluminum lifter bores would be where the slack is and the lifters are not worn. Also the piston oiler jets are fed from the lifter bores and if slack you won't get good pressure to the jets in the piston oilers.
You need to make sure you have a good tune on the engine when you get through. Not normal to have all that carbon on top of the pistons. My guess is you were running very rich and the gas diluted the oil and caused the wearing. Would not be a good idea to tell dealer that. Too much lack of lubrication damage. Hope everything works out for you. It sounds like the dealership is working well with you so I wouldn't rock the boat.
I would prefer a new engine, but you are at the mercy of the MoCo on this.
With the info they are replacing the engine, I would switch back and just run the Harley Oil and have them do the service for a while. Not saying anything wrong with the Amsoil. With the add ons you have I would pull the FP3 and put the stock tune back on. It will run fine. CYA comes to mind. If you have another problem like this I would suspect MOCO will look at it with fine tooth comb. Keep your records also. Probably over kill, but that is what I would do. I never leave one stock so not saying that is what happened. Never had any issues either.
