A "zip" file is in a compressed format so that it can be download faster.
It is a universal standard that all operating systems can handle.
Once you get the compressed (zipped) file downloaded, it must be unzipped before it can be used.
It isn't just an HD or Boom infotainment requirement.
This is true of any software download that is in a "zip" format.

I ran into a snag while trying to update my system AFTER I read the instructions in the owner's manual. After several attempts, I researched the forum and found this thread. Following the instructions above resolved my issue. In the owners manual, it clearly states to load the "zipped folder" onto the USB drive. That is NOT correct as I now know. That brings the total number of times that I have found incorrect instructions from the MOCO, to "3" in the past 3 months.
So much for "reading the instructions"
Thanks for the great info!
