Default 5K Service Question

I have a question about a 5K service. I have the manual and see 5K is not that much to do. The problem is I am at about 4K miles and are planning a 2K mile trip. Should I do it before we leave or after we return? Or should I change oil now and do the rest when we return? Thanks Bob

someone just asked the same question, and got lots of opinions. the 5k service is basically an oil and filter change, the rest is inspect this, check that. So this is my opinion, I'd change it before you go, I just wouldn't want the dealer to have any excuse to deny a warranty claim; to bad though, you only have 3000 miles on your oil now. I change my oil myself so it only cost under $50, so Just Do It!

How could a dealer deny a warranty claim because oil wasnt changed? Please cite where this is specified, then read the Moss-Magnuson Act.

If you did in fact change your oil at 1,000 miles. I'd do the regular 5,000 mile service when you return from your trip. No worries.

Check the fluids and if they're up to snuff, keep riding. I admittedly only check my fluids about 1-2x month (okay 1x/month). I had almost exactly 5000 on my bike before leaving for Ohio Bike Week but didn't have time for service. I bought a quart of oil expecting that I needed to add it. I checked the oil and it was dead nuts center on the dipstick.

So, I didn't add it, took off for Ohio and completed it when I got back with around 5700 miles on it. It won't kill anything.

see, told ya' you'd get lots of opinions; enjoy your trip without a worry, you bought a nice bike now's not the time to be cheap. planned 2k trip turns into a 2.5k or 3k always does.

Ride on, do the 5K service when you get back.

Necessary to change the oil? No. If it makes you feel better, yes. That's pretty much what changing the oil is all about anyway if you stick to the book. There's a lot of cushion that's figured into to the service intervals.

Bob,
Did you use a synthetic oil like mobile one or similar for your 1k oil change?

Mark!
