Default #$^%& shifter problems

So the OL and I decided to make a run to Sturgis for sort of a pre-pre bike week trip. The trip, weather, sites was all epic (as usual). So we head for home yesterday and we get about half way through WY when the shifter linkage decided to go to lunch. I look and find that the primary rod going to the chrome link had somehow back itself out and stripped the knurled end of both. I was pretty peeved to say the least being that this is a 2015 Ultra Limited with less than 5k miles on her, but that tiny voice in the back of my head was saying "it's your damn fault for not checking all bolts before heading out for a 6 hour drive". Anyway, so with my limited tools, I was lucky enough to have the right allen wrench and jimmy rigged it back together so we could get home. So, I have a question out there for those that have had warranty done.....are the good ppl at the stealership going to tell me to pound sand and pay for the damage, or would this be covered? They did a "full" checkout at my 1K service and at about 3.5k miles later, I get this. I'm going to call them up in Denver tomorrow but I'm afraid their going to say that it was my fault for not checking it prior to the ride.......OK let the comments begin! LOL

Had that same episode yesterday with our friends 14 SGS it was inside arm of the shift levers came loose, came home and checked ours one is fine and the other took whole turn to tighten up. You just never know what and when anything is going to crap out on you.

Default Warranty

You should be covered under warranty unless they find something you did to cause the problem, such as drop the bike or similar.

After reading the threads the last few days I checked my '14 (12k) tight as new. Only thing I did is remove the heel shift as soon as I got it home. I have done this on many bikes and have never had a stripped lever or any other shift part. All that weight bouncing around may have something to do with it. Mike

Same thing happened to me. No fuss over warranty work. My bike has never been serviced at a dealer.

Full checkout at 1K service, means they check nothing.. don't trust these underpaid techs to work on your expensive machine..

Agreed, do your own service if possible. I'll take the bigger problems and installs back to the dealer, but I've had terrible service three times now at my original dealer. Basic service is done by the newbies trying to make rate and move up, which is fine, but not on my bike.

I have a good relationship and totally trust the service manager. He recommended that i remove the heel shifter when i got the bike. He said he thought i would be happier with that. I told him that, while i no longer spit shine my boots, i still keep them polished and i want to use the heel shifter. He just said fine, without any explanation.

Anyway, i think the design is weak and would be easy enough for HD to change it to something more reliable. I haven't had any issues, i do kind of baby it, and i do check it quite often, more than i should have to.

So I think HD service folks know this issue happens more than it should.

So i couldn't see them denying any warranty fixing the shift linkage etc.
