Thumbs up Rockout shims and new lifters installed!

Well, I finally got up the gumption to go for it and install a set of Rockout Shims and a set of Woods lifters in the Limited.

Straight-forward job, but extremely tedious and high anxiety (for me, anyway) none-the-less. But I got it done without a scratch, dent, or any leftover parts, other than the OEM lifters.

I was really pissed when I first started it and it was clattering something awful for a little while till the lifters finally filled up with oil. While I was cussing a blue streak, I found a line in the several pieces of paperwork that came with the lifters saying that this is normal.

After a minute or so, they started quietening down till the valve train became essentially silent. Apparently, they come with just a very small amount of assembly lube in them and that's the reason for the noise. The instructions specifically said to NOT pre-fill them with oil, so I didn't. It said that if you pre-fill them, it takes up to 24 hours (I think) for them to fully bleed down so that you can safely rotate the engine to install them for the other cylinder.

Also, I noted well-defined witness marks on all four carrier bolt shanks from the rocker shafts hammering on them, and I have to say, the OEM Made-in-Mexico lifters looked pretty rough sitting beside those premium, Made-in-USA Woods parts. All of the original lifter's rollers were pristine with no scoring or flaking, so I was happy about that, anyway.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to Bikerscum for finding the original problem and then designing and producing the fix - and for a super-low price, at that!

Can't wait to get the ol' girl out on the road and enjoy the peace and quiet, and also the fact that I no longer have to dread doing that job sometime in the future!!

I recently installed shims and lifters as well I removed the spark plugs and cranked the motor over several times for 10 seconds. The lifters still clattered for about 30 seconds but once they pumped up no more clack clack clack valvetrain is nearly silent. The rocker bolts on both cylinders were scored and my bike is 2014 SG with just over 10.000 miles. Thanks again Bikerscum inserts work well!

You know that is how you hurt new lifters, especially if you rev the engine before there pumped full of oil and all air is removed! You should at least try to fill the lifter with oil before instaing and you will still get clattering. Pull the spark plugs and crank over about 3 times 30sec each to give the lifter a fair chance to stay health! If there's any scarring in the lifter bore or on the piston it will cause more oil to bypass and in turn the new lifers will never be as health as they could have been! But I am glad it worked for you

Woods lifters instructions specifically stated to not pre-fill the lifters. They further said that they would be noisy for a while, then quieten-down, which they did.

Yes Sr, no disrespect intended. A pro builder told me how to do this and it don't hurt them everytime, it just gives them a better chance for long life. Woods sales lifters!

The reason they stated is that it would take up to 24 hours for the first pair that was installed using solid push rods to bleed down enough to allow the engine to be turned safely to install the ones for the other cylinder. Plus, if you're using adjustable push rods, you have to completely bottom-out the lifters to set them right.

For the record, I did run the engine with the starter and the plugs out for 3, 20 or so second runs before actually starting it.

I installed a set on mine today.

22k on the Heritage.

Witness marks on the rear.

They were more than marks those bolts had gouges in them.

The front only had one.

I've been busy so I won't have a chance to hear the engine until this weekend.

They are two different operations
You don't have to go into the cam chest to install the kit, as a matter of fact the only two similarities for each job were the removal of the spark plugs.
