I'm trying to figure out the best way to attach an extra bag to my RGS. I'm considering the obvious which is a passenger backrest and luggage rack, don't care for the looks and is expensive. Option two is a driver's backrest which would fit into the bag's pocket and sit on the passenger part of the seat, again don't care for look or do I prefer to ride with a backrest. Option three is installing a passenger grab rail pt # 52400090, not sure how this will look with the stock seat, here again the bag could sit on the passenger part of the seat and be tied to the grab handle. Any thoughts, Pictures?
On my old 06 Night Train I would bungee a bag down to the back seat using the docking hardware on the rear Fender Struts...Rode many miles that way and never had an issue.

Like he says and Harley can sell you a cargo net, they have several sizes to choose from.
Anyway you slice it, you will still have a bag and an attaching device. All of which seems to be "not to your liking". No offense meant, but IDK what youre expecting. lol Here is my vacation setup...Found deals on the 4pt docking kit, sissy bar, rack and Kuryakyn bag on eBay. All for less than half of what charged from Harley.
Everything is easily and quickly detachable to go back to stripped down.
rock103 I seen on ebay a lot of the same stuff Harley sells for a lot less, I assume these are all aftermarket products. Are these what you used and if so how is the quality and fit?
I did, got the Kuryakyn bag for $90, rack from Matazu for $150, 4pt docking kit off ebay for $90 and sissybar and pad off ebay for $120. All excellent quality and no fitment issues. After all, remember Harley stuff is made in China too. lol Probably the same place as these other vendors get their stuff. They just don't mark it up as much.
I have a dry bag from Cabellas,I think it was $49.But it hung out over the fender,so I bought the docking hardware and a stealth rack. The bottom of the bag is a bit of a backrest too.
yeah I know I can strap a bag on but I don't want to just strap something on and ruin the paint over doing a couple trips a year. I want the bag to be supported by anything other than the saddle bag lids or rear fender. Believe me I have lots of experience when it comes to carrying luggage on a motorcycle where the paint don't matter LoL, on my way to James Bay here.
