Default Is This Typical?

'16 Ultra - stock tires and suspension. I love going down the highway. Anyone can ride straight highway. Cornering at speed, and the attempt at aggressive cornering at speed I have to admit scares the $hit out of me. I have this feeling that the front end is going to wash out on me, and I'm a long way from scraping the floor boards. I'm sure not looking for an excuse to throw more money at this thing but I need a shot of confidence. Is it the gap between my ears or typical of the bike and some finesse I'm missing? It's not my Street Bob, I get that, but.... thanks for the input.

You're like me. The bike is more capable than I am and I know it. The way I got more confident is riding with better riders. I followed and figured if their bagger can do it so can mine.

Counter-steering is your friend. Brings a whole new level of confidence and control to riding a touring bike.

I got that for sure. Never quit learning and practicing and I'm a student for sure. I want to shake that sense\feeling that the front wheel is about to wash out like on gravel with none in sight.

That is the biggest misconception out there. It is impossible to steer a motorcycle or bicycle without counter steering. You need to overcome the gyro motion to lean the bike over, otherwise you will just fall over. Simple physics that you should not have to stop & think about while you are doing it.

To OP, more seat time & miles down the road is what will increase your confidence.

But...consciously counter-steering may help the OP with his confidence level.

Yes, thanks. Counter steer is your friend and mine. I only have about 3K miles on the Ultra so I'm a rookie on it for sure. I don't have the same sensations on my Bob same roads, same corners, higher speeds. It's just weird I guess. It's been suggested I get rid of the stock Dunlop. Flatted out the rear and swapped in a Commander II but on the rear so no real tangible handling difference there. I should match them up.
I've had confidence on the bike and my ability, but it's been shaken.

Compared to either my '12 streetglide (totaled) or my '05 FXST (traded), I also have the same feeling of the front tire washing out on my '15 RG. I'm slowly pushing it harder and getting more comfortable on it. I think the 19" front coupled with the the 49mm forks are what is causing the feeling. I hope to try another tire at some point and see how that changed things. I've heard that metzler is putting out an 888 in 130/60b19 and am looking forward to trying one when the stocker wears out.

I don't think you need any modifications to the bike. You do need more saddle time and not just going down the interstate.

I know the curves that could be done at 55 or 60 safely (secondary roads) i took them at 45 the first year. Look back at your books, approaching the turns more slowly and then increasing the speed reasonably in the turn.

Just some more time and don't rush it, get the feel for it and look at some of the yourtube videos of ride like a pro.

Ride by yourself so you aren't trying to keep up with somebody else and you can vary things so you feel comfortable. It will come together, just enjoy each ride and think about what your doing and then it will start to come more naturally as your confidence builds. Safety first.

One trick I learned don't look at the road in front of you, look farther down the road to
see where you want to go. The Bike will scrape stuff before you run out of tire on most
Harley Davidson Motorcycles.
