My wife always uses one week of her vacation days per year to go on a road trip with me. Other than that I'm solo. I have never needed or wanted more than saddlebags for my many solo road trips. I pack light. Don't care for the lowers. The weight loss and look appeals to me. Reminds me of the Road King I had years ago.
Those lowers weigh about 6 lbs each, so 12 lbs makes some difference. I also like the view from the saddle better. Each to his own. I would have looked for a Road King if my wife was not part of the equation. I rode my '94 Road King on many long trips in all kinds of weather. I tour in a full one piece Aerostitch that provides all the weather/rain protection I need.
I would like to add the heated grips from H-D. Looks like they are a azz whipping to install.

The HD grips you mention are a piece of cake to install. I did mine in under 2hrs total. If you have had your fairing off...you will breeze through it.
