The piece that connects the linkage and shifter arms came off while I was riding down the highway yesterday. Seems it has happened to a lot of people. You might want to check it if it hasn't happened to you.
Ya need to replace the cheap assed H-D linkage with a Himes Joint. They will last forever and you can get them chromed too.
I believe the OP is referring to the splined rod that connects to the Shifter rod lever. HD came out a few months ago and updated the torque specifications for this bolt to 132-156 in-lbs. Check it, if and when you ever start to feel a vibration in your right foot when slightly touching the shifter going down the road, it's probably too late to just tighten it. Replace it.

Just had to slide mine back as it was real sloppy and noticed it while cleaning, the hex bolt (#8) on the back side was lose as hell, i removed it applied a little blue lock tite, and seems good. Will keep a eye on it.
.
My favorite part is how the design has the bolt hanging upside down when everything is together so it's guaranteed to fall out if/when it loosens up.
EDIT: Nevermind I'm thinking about the shifter lever. The outside lever has the bolt upside down and I understand that it's one part that you can flip, but it should be the inside lever with the upside down bolt.
