Default Primary oil question

I was getting ready to perform a 3 hole fluid change and had a question. I thought I had some formula + left over from the last change but I don't. I only bought 1 qt this time around so my question is can I use the 32oz of formula + and use mobile 1 20w50 to top it off at the 38oz required?

I would not mix synthetic oil with the formula+. Mixing different types of oils can cause issues.

I wouldn't but it still probably wont hurt. If you must ride then ride it with 32oz. in it on your way to the dealer.

I did. I bought a qt of Redline MTL for my last change thinking I still had some left over from the previous change, which I did not. I topped it up with some HD 20w-50.

When I first got my last bike and the synthetic hype was in full song I read a ton of information about mixing oils and never found a single article that concluded you can't mix the oils. They even sell it blended.

You are fine to mix. Be careful to not overfill. Don't go by what the manual says in measured amount, put in 1qt and check visually as per manual. This isn't rocket surgery, its a primary. You could run only a quart for 10,000 miles and you'd be fine, most dealers only put in a quart. I only put in a liter of Bel Ray primary fluid.

My 2006 Sportster manual advises against mixing oils. It claims that unpredictable chemical reactions can degrade oil quality...or something along those lines.

Yeah, I figured the dealer would only use the quart and call it good. I figured I've kinda mixed them before anyway when I initially went to using the formula + from syn3/mobile 1.

No wonder some seem to have compensator issues and others never do.
The 2016 with narrow primary call for 34 oz wet fill. So yes if you went with 32 oz you would be fine but for one that calls for 38oz and you cut it to 32 oz's that is a major short fall.

The oz's mean nothing. Only the height does. Bottom of the clutch basket, right to bottom. Oh still on my original compensator, running 1 liter in the primary on my 2008.

Manual says 38 oz. I'm using 38 oz., if I'm short I'm taking a drive to the dealer (or wherever) and getting another quart...
